Termites are insects that can be an incredibly destructive force to any wooden object that gets in their way. Unfortunately, your home might become a prime food source for termites. If this should happen to you, it is important to know the correct steps to take in order to quickly and effectively remove them from your home. Let’s take a look at some important things you need to know to prevent termites from turning your home into a disaster area.
This is an effective termite eradication method that many people do not know about. There are portable devices available that produce microwaves which termites find annoying. It takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes in order to effectively treat a section of board that is two feet long. Drilling holes in the wood is not necessary. There are places that rent the portable microwave devices, so you do not need to buy one.
2. Orange oil
This is an extract that can be found in the peels of oranges. Orange oil can irritate both your eyes and skin, so make sure to adequately protect yourself when you are working with this product. Orange oil is commonly used to eliminate many types of insects, not just termites. The reason it is so effective is its ability to dissolve the exoskeleton of the insects, which eventually kills them. In order to apply orange oil, small holes should be drilled into the wood that has been infested. Put the oil into the holes and the places where you see termite activity. It could take anywhere from three days to three weeks for the termites to be eradicated. It will depend on how bad the infestation is.
3. Boric acid
This is considered to be one of the best ways to go about killing termites. It is an insecticide that is natural. It works by dehydrating the termites and shutting down their nervous system. Boric acid should be applied to the infested wood by either coating the wood or spraying it. You can also use bait stations that contain boric acid. You can place these throughout your home in areas with the most termite activity. The termites will be attracted to the bait station, but they will be making a one-way trip. It should be noted that boric acid is toxic if you ingest or inhale it. Therefore, a face mask and gloves should be used at all times when you are working with it. Pets and children should also be kept out of the area.
